Lymph nodes are found all over the body and important component of the immune system since they help the body fight germs and other foreign substances. Areas of the body that have lymph nodes are those found behind the ears, under the jaw and chin, in the neck, on the back of the head, on the armpits and the groin.

Swollen lymph nodes can grow up to the size of a pea to an egg. Swollen lymph nodes can be a symptom that there is something wrong with some parts of the body which can be caused by infections such as infection of the ear, abscessed tooth, common cold, gingivitis, mononucleosis, tonsillitis and infection of the skin.
Autoimmune conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and HIV can also lead to the development of swollen lymph nodes that can be tender and painful.

Treatment and home remedies for swollen lymph nodes
- Apply a warm compress on the affected area. Dip a washcloth in hot water, wring out excess water and place it over the swollen area at least 5-10 minutes every day until the swelling is minimized. Warm compress helps in minimizing the swelling and pain of the lymph nodes as well as helps promote the proper circulation of the blood in the area. Another option is to wash the swollen area using warm water a few times throughout the day.
- Massage helps stimulate the lymph nodes to function normally and also lessens the swelling and accumulation of impurities in the nodes. By using the fingers, gently massage the lymph nodes at least 5 minutes at 2-3 times every day until the swelling is minimized.
- Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Gargle the solution at least several times every day for 1 week. Salt water helps in minimizing the swelling and inflammation in the lymph nodes in the neck that is caused by infection of the throat.
- Eat 2-3 raw garlic cloves every day and include garlic in preparing dishes every day. Massage the affected area using garlic oil for a few minutes at least 2-3 times every day. If possible, take a garlic supplement every day.
- Mix equal amounts of cider vinegar and water. Dip a washcloth in the solution and apply to the swollen area for 5 minutes. Rinse it off using warm water and then pat it dry. Repeat this procedure at least once or twice throughout the day.
- Another way is mixing a tablespoon of raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar and place a few drops of honey in a glass of water. The individual should drink the solution at least twice in a day since it helps with swollen lymph nodes.
